Exam Strategy

How to score higher.

Strategy 1
Read the Stimulus Before the Question
Human Geography FRQs are often anchored to maps, graphs, or photos. Spend 30–60 seconds analyzing the stimulus for patterns, scales, labels, and data before reading the question. Specific details from the stimulus are required for full credit.
Strategy 2
Use Precise Geographic Vocabulary
Geographic terms earn points; paraphrases do not. 'Centripetal forces' earns the point; 'things that bring people together' does not. Build a vocabulary deck for each unit's key terms and practice using them in written sentences.
Strategy 3
Explain, Don't Just Identify
Most FRQ parts ask you to 'explain' not just 'identify.' Explaining means: name the concept + describe the mechanism + connect it to the specific context in the question. A one-word or one-phrase answer earns zero on an explain prompt.
Strategy 4
Know the Required Models and Theories
The exam tests your ability to apply spatial models: central place theory, rank-size rule, primate city, von Thünen's model, Burgess concentric zone, Hoyt sector model, Harris-Ullman multiple-nuclei, Rostow's stages of development, Wallerstein's world-systems theory. Know each model's core mechanism and its geographic implications.
