Omitting rotational kinetic energy (½Iω²) when applying energy conservation to rolling objects — using only ½mv²_cm and losing all energy-accounting credit on rolling-without-slipping problems
Applying conservation of angular momentum when a net external torque is present (e.g., a person dropping onto a rotating platform while a brake acts), incorrectly treating the system as torque-free
Rolling constraint errors: failing to apply v = rω to relate translational and rotational speeds, or applying it only at one point in a multi-step solution and reverting to treating them independently
In orbital mechanics problems, confusing gravitational potential energy (U = -GMm/r, negative) with the magnitude GMm/r, leading to incorrect total-energy or escape-speed calculations
