Common error

Confusing exponential growth (J-curve, unlimited resources) with logistic growth (S-curve, approaches carrying capacity K) — students often describe logistic growth without referencing K or the limiting factor

Common error

Misidentifying which biogeochemical cycle step is performed by bacteria — nitrogen fixation (N2 → NH3), nitrification (NH3 → NO3−), and denitrification (NO3− → N2) are all bacterially mediated; conflating them loses FRQ points

Common error

Applying the 10% energy transfer rule to all ecosystem levels as if it were exact, rather than an approximation, and confusing it with net primary productivity calculations

Common error

Claiming that primary succession begins with soil already present — primary succession starts on bare rock or other substrate with no soil; secondary succession begins where soil remains after a disturbance
