Systematic right-hand rule errors in cross-product direction — students invert the direction of F = qv × B or the Biot-Savart field element dB, producing errors that cascade through an entire problem; negative charge carriers compound this by requiring an additional sign flip.
Applying Ampère's Law to situations that lack the required symmetry — choosing an Amperian loop on which B is not constant or not everywhere parallel (or perpendicular) to the path, making ∮B·dL ≠ B·(path length) and rendering the integral non-evaluable.
Setting up the Biot-Savart integral without correctly identifying the source point and field point — students confuse r̂ (unit vector from source element to field point) with the position of the source element, or neglect the sin θ projection factor, leading to incorrect integrands.
Treating the magnetic force as capable of doing work on a charged particle — incorrectly attributing speed changes to magnetic force; the magnetic force is always perpendicular to velocity and does zero work, so it changes direction but not kinetic energy.
